Meenakshi temple 2nd best iconic place in upkeep for 2019








The Meenakshi Amman temple has been adjudged the second best maintained iconic place by the ministry of Jal Shakti Abhiyan under the Swachh Iconic Places for 2019. The award, which was announced last week, was given to the Madurai Corporation appreciating the upkeep of the temple surroundings.




Corporation commissioner S Visakan received the award from Jal Shakti minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Union minister of state for Jal Shakti Abhiyan Rattan Lal Kattaria in New Delhi on Saturday. Officials said 10 iconic places including Meenakshi temple were selected for development under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan a few years ago. It was already adjudged the best iconic place in 2017.




The temple and its surroundings are being developed utilizing corporation social responsibility fund from private and public sector undertaking companies. Officials said various measures to improve the cleanliness and looks of the temple were taken up by the corporation in recent years.





Installation of 25 e-toilets, introduction of specially-made dumper bins to collect segregated waste, banning of plastic bags, deployment of sanitary employees roundthe-clock, advanced sand cleaning machines, installation of 63 compact dumper bins, purchase of four mini compact trucks, installation of 15 automated RO water system and purchase of five battery operated vehicles to take devotees around were some of the initiatives.
