Celebration of Swachh Bharat Pakhwadas
In order to accelerate the efforts to achieve total sanitation and cleanliness across India as part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, CPREEC Centre organized an awareness cum cleanliness drive with school children around Mylapore Temple – an Ecological Heritage Site in Chennai on June 14, 2016 during Swachch Bharat Pakhwada (1-15 June, 2016).
The school children were first explained by the CPREEC Joint Director and ENVIS Coordinator Dr.P.Sudhakar about the need for spreading the message of cleanliness and contributing to keep their surroundings clean. The mission and objectives of Swachh bharat abhiyan were explained to the students and posters were distributed to them. Children took active part in displaying the posters at vantage points near the temple premises.

The children later on equipped with brooms and trash bags along with ENVIS Staff went around cleaning the sannidhi street area picking up plastic bottles, bags and other garbage. They also talked to the visitors as well as shopkeepers and requested them to keep the area clean.

This cleanliness drive was appreciated by the surrounding area public who also promised to keep the area clean. The change in the mindset of the people towards cleanliness was a very positive outcome with students acting as change agents.

The ‘Swachhata Pakhwada’ proved to be an energizer that boosted the morale of students who resolved to continue their contribution in not just keeping their surroundings clean but also in spreading awareness about the same.
This event was actively covered by media as well as onlookers and general public who later thanked children and ENVIS Team for their efforts.
