Biodiversity congress to begin on Thursday

 The third edition of the Indian Biodiversity Congress (IBC) will be held in Chennai this week.

 

Giving details of the event that will commence on Thursday, Nanditha Krishna, chairperson of the Congress and director, CPR Environmental Education Centre, said the main focus of the event will be creating awareness of biodiversity.

 

An exhibition on the theme ‘Cultural Biodiversity of India’ will also be held.

 

Biju Kumar, organising secretary, said the meeting would serve as the largest platform to discuss the current status of biodiversity in the country.

 

It would formulate a vision and an alternate strategic plan for conservation of biodiversity, he said.

 

The first Congress was held in Thiruvananthapuram and the second one in Bengaluru. In Chennai, the three-day event will be held at SRM University, Kattankulathur. This year’s theme will be ‘biodiversity for poverty eradication’.

 

Raman Sukumar, chairman, Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, K. Venkataraman, director, Zoological Survey of India, Shekhar Dattatri, noted wildlife and conservation filmmaker, Bittu Saghal, editor of Sanctuary Asia magazine, P.S. Easa, director, Kerala Forest Research Institute, are some of the biodiversity researchers who will participate in the Congress.
