Atri

Atri a small village in Khurda district of Odisha is famous for its perennial hot spring. The temperature of the water of this hot spring is about 57 °C and it’s believed that this hot spring has medicinal and spiritual properties for curing skin diseases and other diseases as well. There is a temple near the hot spring, which is dedicated to Lord Hattakeswar Mahadev. A great annual fair is held at the temple on the day of Makar Sankranti, in which large numbers of devotees come and worship. There is a large pond inside the temple campus where the devotees bathe and get rid of the disease.

During Makar Sankranti, a grand ritual is organised where betel nuts are thrown into one of the ponds near the hot spring. Women who have not conceived after marriage try to find the betel nuts from the holy water. The ones who manage to find a betel nut consume it and, it is believed, that they have the maximum chance to conceive within a few days. Although it may sound strange, villagers residing near Atri and Hatakeswar temple have believed in this theory since ages.
